Monumental pyramids in Peru are as old as Egypt's
The claim: Caral, in Peru's Supe Valley, had large platform pyramids and a planned urban centre by about 2600 BCE.
Why this label: Radiocarbon dates published in Science in 2001 place monumental building at Caral from about 2627 cal BCE. This is now accepted, and it pushed the start of urban life in the Americas back by more than a thousand years from what textbooks taught a generation ago.
Background
Caral has six large platform mounds, sunken circular plazas and residential areas, built without pottery and supported by irrigation agriculture and fishing. It shows how a mainstream timeline can move a long way when new sites are dated.
What has been measured
Dates, measurements and documented findings, kept separate from interpretation.
- Dates from 4090 radiocarbon years BP (2627 cal BCE) onward for monumental architecture, urban settlement and irrigation agriculture. [1]
Evidence and arguments for
- Multiple radiocarbon dates from construction contexts. [1]
Evidence and arguments against, or limits
- Caral is earlier than once thought but still within the Holocene and fits a local Andean sequence. It does not by itself imply an Ice Age civilisation. [1]
Open questions & what would change the label
Excavation of other Norte Chico sites may show even earlier monumental phases.
