Pumapunku's precision stonework required lost advanced technology
The claim: The H-blocks and finely cut andesite at Pumapunku, Bolivia, are too precise for the tools of the Tiwanaku culture, and the site may be much older than archaeologists say.
Where the evidence stands: Radiocarbon dating places Pumapunku's construction in the 6th–7th centuries CE. Arthur Posnansky's early-20th-century astronomical estimate of about 15,000 BCE is not supported by those dates. How the hard andesite was shaped so precisely is still discussed, so the technique part stays open.
Background
Pumapunku is part of the Tiwanaku complex near Lake Titicaca. Its superstructure used andesite, its foundations and channels red sandstone. Alexei Vranich's 3D-printed reconstruction showed the blocks were made to standard modules, almost like prefabricated parts. A 2023 Bayesian study dates Tiwanaku's collapse to about 1010–1050 CE.

Proponents' main arguments and cited evidence
- Proponents point to flat faces, sharp interior angles and drill-like holes in hard andesite as evidence of tools beyond the known Andean kit. [4]
What evidence would help settle it
Microscopic tool-mark analysis of the andesite surfaces compared with experimental abrasion and pounding would settle the technique question.
